The Watchers
Text: Ezekiel 33:1-11
Prayer Focus: Pray for the Christians to take up their role as watchmen. Pray that the eyes may be enlightened to see and pray against the strategies of the enemy. Pray that none of our children may be lost. Pray for the souls of the human.
Who are the Watchers?
Watchmen or watchers in the Bible are what we would call security guards nowadays. In Bible times they did not have the technology to send telescopes or satellites to monitor the regions surrounding a city or territory. They would often send out spies to find out what military attacks the other places where scheming up. They would also build walls to guard their cities and place watchmen on top of the tower to keep continual watch of any impending intruders or dangers.
Notice there are two sets of watchers:
The watchmen in the towers set to guard and protect the well-being of the city
The watchmen or spies of the enemy lurking to see when the guards have fallen asleep, so they can invade, attack and destroy the city.
Likewise in the Spiritual realm there are the godly and ungodly forces at work watching over the human souls.
The Lord watch over his words to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12). – Almighty God has his angels as watchers in the heavenly realms and the Church as his ambassadors on earth to watch over his people.
Satan – birds of air watch over the words to steal it (Matthew 13:4; Ephesians-2-2) – Satan also has demonic forces working in the spiritual realm and he also works through wicked or ungodly men to destroy the plan of God for his people.
What is the Role of the Christians?
Christians or more rightly (the Church) are Jehovah God’s representatives on earth today. Therefore, we are called to be Watchmen guarding the plan of God on the earth.
Ezekiel 3:17: Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
Ephesians 4:1: I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.
Note with responsibly there comes accountability and consequences.
Ezekiel 33:6 tells us:
But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
You see, the Church must warn the world of impending danger. We are set as a light house and we must shine our light so others may be saved and safe from impending danger or destruction.
What does the Watchman see today?
"The burden of Dumah [Edom]. He called to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night? The watchman said, The morning comes, and also the night: if ye will inquire, inquire ye: return, come."—Isaiah 21:11, 12
Christians must be aware of the times and seasons, aware of movements, aware of changes and what the signs of the times means. When we look in the Scriptures we see that Jesus is coming soon – morning is breaking forth and we within the Church are safe.
Yet, there is also night or darkness in society. Corruption, crime and violence, addictions, lawlessness seem to be getting worst and worst, and people are unaware or sleeping in this atmosphere. The Church cannot be sleeping but must remain alert. Stand our guard and help to rescue the souls of men.
How does the Church watch?
We watch on our knees. When we see lawlessness in our society, in our government, schools, businesses even in our homes and places of worship we go to the Bible, read the Word of God and declare what scriptures say over out circumstance and over the people. Then we get up off our knees and warn the people – blow the trumpet. Sound the alarm!
Today, we pray Ephesians Chapter 1:17-23
That the eyes of our understanding may be enlightened, so we may know the mysteries and understand the signs of the times.
Pray 1 Thessalonians 5:1-9 (KJV)
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.
God bless you.
